Cat Vaccinations at Hamilton Road Animal Hospital in Columbus, OH
Vaccinating your cat is a great way to prevent harmful diseases that could affect your cat's short and long-term health. At Hamilton Road Animal Hospital in Columbus, OH, we offer vaccines for cats and other pets.
Core Cat Vaccinations at our Veterinary Hospital
At our veterinary hospital, we recommend core cat vaccinations for every cat, regardless of lifestyle. These vaccines protect against highly contagious illnesses, including rabies, calicivirus, panleukopenia (feline distemper), rhinotracheitis and feline leukemia vaccines are recommended for all kittens.
Rabies
Ohio's rabies laws are controlled by local ordinances. Franklin County mandates the rabies laws for Columbus and Gahanna. In Franklin County, all cats, dogs and ferrets must receive rabies vaccinations by licensed veterinarians, and owners are responsible for keeping the pet's immunization records. Rabies vaccines should be administered yearly to cats or as vaccine labels recommend.
Calicivirus
Calicivirus is an upper respiratory infection that is highly contagious in cats. Vaccination does not prevent the disease, but it is very effective at reducing the symptoms and duration. Booster shots should be given yearly.
Panleukopenia (Feline Distemper)
Feline distemper is a viral infection that is highly contagious between cats, and it can live for years on surfaces. Sterilizing surfaces that may be infected with feline distemper involves using a solution of 1/2 cup of bleach to a gallon of water. The FPV vaccine is highly effective at preventing disease. Boosters should be given yearly.
Rhinotracheitis
Rhinotracheitis is a contagious upper respiratory disease that is very similar to the calicivirus. The vaccine reduces the duration and severity of the illness. Boosters should be given yearly.
Feline Leukemia
Feline leukemia is a high-mortality disease caused by the feline leukemia virus. Feline leukemia produces immunosuppression, which can lead to other diseases or infections. The disease is transmitted by direct contact with infected cats or contaminated food dishes or litter boxes. Booster vaccinations should be given yearly to susceptible cats.
