Dog Breeds That Don't Like Water

5 Dog Breeds That Don't Like Water

Are you thinking about adding a new dog to your family? Then you'll want to put some time into researching dog breeds. Each dog breed has its own personality and interesting quirks. You'll want to find a dog that's just the right fit for your lifestyle.

Here at Hamilton Road Animal Hospital in Columbus, Ohio, we celebrate the relationship between dogs and humans. Some people want a dog that enjoys their favorite activities, like swimming or boating. But others don't love the smell of wet dog and prefer a furry friend who won't jump in every lake he sees. That's why we've compiled this list of 5 dog breeds that don't like water.

Chihuahua

These tiny dogs aren't water-lovers. This might be because they get cold easily. Chihuahuas have a lot of personality in a tiny package. The American Kennel Club describes the Chihuahua personality as "charming, graceful, and sassy".  A Chihuahua would rather hang out with you on land than swim in a lake or pool.

Pug

Pugs are fun-loving jokesters. However, they don't like a lot of exercise, including swimming. Pugs are happiest just relaxing with their human companions.

Basset Hound

Bassets are sweet, gentle dogs with long ears and short legs. Their body type makes swimming difficult, and basset hounds usually get tired quickly. However, their friendly demeanor makes them a great family pet for dry land.

Dachshund

Dachshunds, or "Weiner dogs", also have adorably stubby legs. Unfortunately, these dogs are not good swimmers. They also don't like the cold, so chilly water isn't something they'd enjoy. Dachshunds are smart and do need regular exercise, such as walks.

Greyhound

These sleek racing dogs may look like they'd be fast in the water, but swimming isn't their favorite pass time. Surprisingly, most greyhounds have a tendency towards laziness. When they do exercise, they'd rather walk with you on land than go for a swim.

Testimonials

Read What Our Clients Say

Wow! Thanks to all the staff at Anderson Vet Clinic. I feel like you all truly love what you do! My kitty, Lola and I always have such a pleasant experience when we come in. Fortunately, it’s usually just for a check-up, but I would not leave Lola in anyone else’s hands but yours. Thank you for your caring commitment!

I have benefited tremendously from the care my pet received from Dr. Anderson.

John Doe / San Diego, CA

Fabio wasn’t eating the food I was giving him and I didn’t feel he was getting the nutrition he needed. Thanks to Dr. Anderson, he evaluated Fabio and his current diet to make some recommendations and now Fabio has gone from barely eating to finishing his meals and he looks healthier than ever. You clearly are an expert in your field...thanks so much!
